Sites' Experiences

The following comments characterize some of the experiences site staff have had in implementing and overseeing the IDU-SSE program.

  • Some participants are excellent SSEs but are unable to meet the project reporting, documentation, and regular meeting requirements. "I usually work with them for a while, see if they can make 3 appointments in a row, before I ask them if they want to participate in the program..."
  • Participants eager to talk about their experiences and risk behaviors, which "...sometimes significantly increases amount of time required to complete the survey..."
  • "...excellent opportunity to get to know participants on a deeper level and to address issues that are of a more sensitive nature than what is readily discussed at an exchange site..."
  • Over time staff become more comfortable: "...we are able to complete the process in a shorter time and feel more at ease when asking questions." "...have seen an increase in the number of SEP clients and in the numbers of syringes exchanged"
  • "...quality of contact between outreach workers and SSEs has deepened." "One of the SSEs who was previously trained in using Narcan has saved 4 people's lives..."
  • SSE staff recently gained entrance to a reservation that SEP had been trying to access for 5 years.
  • "We are starting to have conversations with IDUs that we have not had before..."
  • "Our SEPs, the City, and the County Office of AIDS are talking for the first time about harm reduction!"
